Obituary | Isaac Cyrus Mays Isaac Mays died April 6th, 1912 One of the best known citizens of Clearfield County died at his home near New Millport, Saturday evening, April 6th 1912. He had been in failing health for many years, but during the last three years of his life he was confined to his home, most of the time not being able to converse with his many friends whom he loved to talk with when in better health. But notwithstanding all this, never did he forget the faces, or fail to enjoy the hearty handshakes which came to him from old friends he knew and loved so well. And as his children gathered home one by one he seemed to know them, although he could not speak. He leaves to morn his death his wife, four sons and four daughters. All were with him in his dying hours but one, J. B. (Jesse Sylvester) Mays, who resided in Colorado. Isaac Mays was born in Pike Township June 6 1836, and died April 6 1912, have arrived at the rip old age of 75 years and 10 months. He was married to Sarah (Catherine) High January (Thursday) 29th, 1863. There were born to this union ten children, all living except two, Cyrus Elmer and one infant babe. Cyrus Elmer was drown in a spring at the age of three (2). The babe (Peter) was a twin of Paul Peter, and died soon (two days) after birth. The surviving children George McClellan of Berwinsdale, William Alison of Houtzdale, Jesse Sylvester of Pueblo Colorado, Paul Peter at home, Mrs. R.A. Erhard (Effie Elizabeth) of Curwensville, Mrs. C.H. Brown (Clara Jane), of /DuBois, Mrs. Obe (Obediah Y) Bloom (Hanna Irene) of Curwensville , and Mrs. Bruce (Calvin) Smeal (Mary Catherine) of Clearfield. On Saturday evening just a little after seven o’clock he entered into that sleep never more to awake. So calmly, so peacefully he passed into eternity, we could not bid him to stay. Just as the day was ending Just as the sun went down One more sole was wafted To that eternal Home Just as the week had ended Before the Sabbath day He entered into that peaceful rest We knew he had gone to stay Just as the year was closing Before the Easter Dawn The death angel calmly entered And took his spirit home. All day long we watched him Knowing the end was near All day long we expected The angle to appear Just as the sun was sinking Below yon western sky There came a change upon him We knew that he must die We would not live by bread alone But by the word of grace In strength of which we travel on To our abiding place [4] | |
